Ledbury swimming pool bid update

Herefordshire Council has this week learned that a lottery funding bid for £400k to refurbish Ledbury Swimming Pool has been unsuccessful.  Having exhausted this avenue, efforts are now being made to obtain funds from the council’s capital programme in order to carry out essential works to the ageing roof structure and mechanical and electrical systems.

In addition, there still remains a need to continue to secure additional funds for a fundamental redesign of the internal changing and other ancillary accommodation. These are however secondary issues posing no threat to the building’s continued operation.

Earlier this year, Sport England launched a funding scheme for the refurbishment of swimming pool changing rooms. The council applied, asking for £400k to do some of the work next year.

Councillor Harry Bramer, cabinet member for major contracts, said “I was disappointed to learn that our recent bid had been unsuccessful.  There is the opportunity to resubmit next year, and we are hoping for some very detailed feedback from the funders before we decide whether to go down this route or not.  In the meantime, we are determined to try and find a solution quickly which is why we are bidding for cash from the council’s capital programme.

“I am urging support for the proposal from my colleagues and inviting thoughts on how we might seek innovative ways to secure sufficient resources to complete the full refurbishment scheme in due course.”

The bid will be discussed, alongside other bids for funding at a meeting of the council’s Cabinet later this month.
