Lift and staircase closure at Garrick multi storey car park

Visitors to the Garrick multi storey car park on Widemarsh Street will not be able to use the lift and its associated staircase between 17 September and 9 November 2012.

The council is refurbishing the lift and south staircase (the one closest to the road) in the car park and this phase of the work has been scheduled to ensure it is finished before Christmas shopping really gets going.  Although the south staircase will be closed, the north staircase will be open as normal.

The council’s contractors will be installing new lifts which will be more reliable and pleasant to use and will be on site from 10 September in preparation for the work to commence the following week.

The second phase of work will take place in the New Year, which will complete the refurbishment of the south staircase, refurbish the north staircase and maintain the parking areas.  The council is erecting signs to warn car park users of the disruption.

“We recognise that this will be disruptive and will cause inconvenience to car park users” said Councillor Graham Powell, cabinet member for education and infrastructure.  “The council apologises for the inconvenience, but the work does need to be done and we have tried to minimise the impact of the lift and staircase closures.  I think people will be pleased with the new lifts and the improvements to the staircases once the work has finished.”
