Top markets and fairs team scoops national award

The markets team with their award
Herefordshire Council Markets Team

Shoppers at one of the county’s many public markets have an award-winning team behind the scenes making sure they run smoothly and that people get the best experience when shopping locally.

Herefordshire Council’s Markets Team has recently been awarded runners-up in the category of ‘Market Team of the Year’ at a prestigious national competition organised by NABMA – the National Association of British Market Authorities.

The award was presented at the recent annual NABMA conference in Harrogate in recognition of the commitment and dedication shown by council staff who work on the wide range of retail markets that the authority operates and manages.

The last 12 months has seen growth in several markets, including the twice weekly Hereford retail market which now boasts over 35 stalls, bucking the trends seen by many areas in the country.

The national ‘Love Your Market’ initiative, giving first time traders a helping hand into market trading, was held in the County in June and July of this year, with several budding entrepreneurs moving on to regular market trading as a result.

Market trading can assist in increasing the vibrancy and diversity to an area. The recent ‘Review of the High Street’ carried out by TV personality Mary Portas notably credits on street sales as playing a vital part in providing local employment and contributing to the wider local economy.

Councillor Roger Phillips, cabinet member for markets said: “Our markets team plays a key role in ensuring that the range of markets across the county is vibrant and successful. I am delighted that they have been given this well deserved recognition”.
