Hereford’s newest traffic-free river crossing over the River Wye steps closer to completion. The Greenway links Hereford City with Rotherwas Industrial Estate and is due for completion shortly before Christmas.
Works progressing on site are mainly finishing works and include completion of the parapets on the bridge deck, finishing of the anti-slip surfacing, installation of the handrails and the handrail lighting.
Now that the heavy bridge plant is off-site works to the Greenway on the Rotherwas side have been able to get underway. A new path from the bridge towards Rotherwas will allow the opening of the first completed section from the bridge to the Thorn Business Park in early December.
Currently up to 500 cycling trips are undertaken every day along the Holme Lacy Road to the Rotherwas Industrial Estate and we expect similar levels, if not more, will use the new bridge once opened.
The scheme is part of charity Sustrans’ Connect2 project, providing new everyday walking and cycling links in communities across the UK. Connect2 was awarded £50million from the Big Lottery Fund following a public vote in 2007 and part of this grant is being used in Hereford, alongside funding from Herefordshire Council.
