A new 70-place children’s nursery has opened in Hereford in order to meet an anticipated surge in demand for places for two-year-olds.
Herefordshire Council has appointed Merry Go Round nursery to run the newly furnished facility for two to five year olds at the former Springfield Children’s Centre, on the site of Riverside Primary School. The new nursery will work alongside Riverside Primary School’s nursery and the existing neighbourhood nursery to make sure there are plenty of places available for parents with young children in South Wye.
Cabinet member for children’s services, Councillor Jeremy Millar, said: “The Government has made changes that will result in more two-year-olds being able to access free nursery education and we need to make sure we have enough places available in the right areas to cope with demand.
“The council undertook a review of children’s centres last year and as a result, decided to re-designate one of the buildings used for a children’s centre in South Wye as a children’s nursery.
“Merry Go Round nursery is a privately run nursery with a track record of excellence in our county and is rated by Ofsted as outstanding.”
Nicki Ovel from Merry Go Round said: “We have already begun recruiting new children and are looking forward to working with the Riverside school community. Our vision is to provide inclusive provision aimed at nurturing children's individuality by following the Reggio Emilia approach to learning."
Thousands of two-year-olds are already benefitting from funded places across the UK. The government announced earlier this month that the criteria for funding will change next year to enable more working family’s on low incomes to receive free childcare places.
