New approach to helping people live at home for longer

Herefordshire Council is pleased to announce that it has appointed Independence Trust, part of the Herefordshire Housing Group, to run independent living reablement services across the county.

Beginning in July 2014, Independence Trust will introduce a new approach in Herefordshire that will focus on providing tailored support to help people stay at home for longer.

Reablement services help people who are at risk of going into hospital or residential care; or who are ready to come home from hospital or a residential care facility, by providing short-term intensive support.  It aims to help an adult regain or maintain skills so that they can carry on living independently in the community.

Councillor Graham Powell, cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “We need to help support people to live at home for longer.  Rather than providing services that people are invited to access, we need to work with every individual to make sure that we do all we can to provide them with the skills they need to live at home.  We’re changing our approach to tailored support rather than universal services so that our resources work better to achieve better outcomes for residents.

“I am delighted that Independence Trust, a local organisation, has successfully bid for this contract.  Helping people live safe, healthy and independent lives is a priority for the council and we will work with Independence Trust and other providers of home care support, to achieve this.”

Peter Steel, managing director for the Herefordshire Housing Group, added: “This is a great opportunity to support individuals to achieve their potential for sustainable wellbeing and independence.

“Providing total wellbeing services is the core of what we deliver, improving the day to day living that individuals and communities experience.  The independent living reablement service will provide vital support to the people of Herefordshire for a better future.”
